Generator Sizing Scenarios

Choosing the right generator starts with understanding your specific power needs. We have pre-calculated generator size recommendations for over 30 common scenarios, from basic power outage essentials to comprehensive whole-house coverage, construction sites, medical equipment, and specialty applications. Each scenario includes a detailed appliance list, wattage breakdown, and specific generator type recommendations.

Browse the scenarios below organized by generator size tier. Small generators under 3 kW are ideal for camping and basic essentials. Medium generators from 4 to 7 kW cover home office backup and basic whole-house needs. Large generators from 8 to 12 kW handle well pumps, sump pumps, and multiple high-draw appliances. Extra-large generators above 13 kW provide full whole-house coverage including central air conditioning and heavy power tools.

If none of these scenarios exactly match your needs, use the interactive calculator on the homepage to select your specific appliances and get a custom generator size recommendation. You can also use these scenarios as starting points and add or remove appliances based on your actual household or job site requirements.

Large (8-12 kW) Generator Scenarios

Large portable or small standby generators are needed for these comprehensive scenarios. Includes well pumps, sump pumps, and multiple high-draw appliances running simultaneously.

Extra Large (13+ kW) Generator Scenarios

Whole-house standby generators with automatic transfer switches are recommended for these heavy-load scenarios that include central AC, welders, hot tubs, or comprehensive whole-house coverage.

How to Choose Between Scenarios

The right scenario depends on your primary goal and budget. If you are preparing for emergency power outages, start with the Power Outage Essentials scenario and add appliances based on your household's specific needs. Homes on well water should always include the well pump since it is the only source of running water. Homes with basements in flood-prone areas need the sump pump as a priority load. Families with medical equipment should prioritize those devices above all other comfort loads.

For budget-conscious buyers, note that the generator cost increases significantly between size tiers. A quality 3,000-watt inverter generator costs $500 to $1,000, while a 7,000-watt portable runs $800 to $2,000, and a 12,000-watt standby generator installed can cost $5,000 to $10,000 or more. The largest savings come from reducing your load below the threshold where a much larger generator is needed. For example, eliminating central AC from your generator load might save thousands in generator cost by allowing a portable unit instead of a standby installation.

Consider a phased approach: start with a portable generator sized for your essential loads, and upgrade to a standby generator later if outages prove frequent enough to justify the investment. The portable generator remains useful as a backup to the standby or for job site and recreational use. Our calculator helps you right-size each phase of your generator strategy.
